As we step into 2025, marking 200 years since the pivotal events of the 1824 presidential election, my next novel invites readers to revisit one of the most contentious and transformative periods in American history. A sequel to Masque of Honor, this new story, which is based on true events, delves into the political and personal complexities of a rapidly evolving nation. While Jack McCarty remains a central figure who somehow finds himself back on the dueling field, this book shines a spotlight on other characters from Masque of Honor, revealing their unique perspectives and roles in shaping the story against a backdrop of dramatic political change and personal struggle.
The novel is set from 1821-1826, a time of shifting alliances, fiery debates, and the emergence of new political identities that reshaped how the American people engaged with their government. This sequel captures this turbulent era, weaving historical events with the all drama and flamboyant characters you expect in my stories.
The book starts at the end of 1821, and it’s not long before Jack finds himself in the midst of a number of controversies including the infamous “corrupt bargain” that shook the foundations of our young republic. The election of 1824 was hotly contested among four major candidates: Andrew Jackson, John Quincy Adams, William Crawford, and Henry Clay. When no candidate won a majority of the Electoral College votes, the decision fell to the House of Representatives, as mandated by the 12th Amendment. In a dramatic turn, Henry Clay threw his support behind John Quincy Adams, securing Adams’ presidency despite Jackson winning both the popular vote and the majority of the electoral college.
When Adams named Clay as Secretary of State, Jackson cried foul and accused the two of striking a quid-pro-quo “corrupt bargain.” This political maneuvering left the nation divided and fueled suspicions of backroom deals and power plays—a sentiment that feels strikingly familiar in today’s political landscape.
For me, what makes this moment in history so compelling—and so relevant—is how much it resonates with our present. Two centuries later, the United States continues to grapple with political divides, partisan rhetoric, and the complexities of democracy. The debates may center on different issues, but the underlying tensions of power, representation, and governance remain remarkably consistent. As the narrative unfolds in this sequel, readers will find themselves reflecting on the cyclical nature of history and the enduring challenges of building a more perfect union.
My hope in writing this story is to provide a gripping continuation of the Masque of Honor saga (as so many of you have pleaded me to write) and serves as a poignant reminder that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
Stay tuned for more updates on my upcoming novel, where history and fiction collide to tell a timeless tale of ambition, loyalty, and the human spirit. Whether you’re a history buff, a fan of compelling characters, or someone who simply loves a good story, this book promises to be an unforgettable journey through a defining chapter of America’s past—and its ongoing legacy.
