The Inaugural Public Exhibition of Reflectionism

September 12, 2026

On September 12, 2026, nine artists came together at Samuel Lynne Galleries in Dallas, Texas, to formally present the Reflectionism movement to the public for the first time — a milestone exhibition that established a new chapter in contemporary art.

Sharon's Reflectionist landscapes — built with palette knives, saturated color, and a belief that paint can capture what a camera never could — joined eight other artists in defining a movement rooted in feeling, memory, and the light that lives beyond the lens.

The Philosophy

The Color the Camera Can’t See

A camera records what is there. A painting captures what it feels like to be there — the light a lens can’t hold, the color that exists only in memory. That is Reflectionism: not the landscape as it appears, but as it lives in you long after you’ve left it.

Borrowed from her mentor JD Miller, Reflectionism is the belief that art should capture not the literal scene but the feelings and reflections it leaves behind — the emotional residue of a place, a moment, a memory. It is the philosophy behind every painting in this gallery.

Art Meets Philanthropy

Great Falls at the Loudoun Museum Charity Auction

On September 22, one of Sharon’s landscape paintings — a Reflectionist interpretation of Great Falls — will be donated to the Loudoun Museum’s charity auction, helping preserve the history of the county she calls home. The painting captures the falls in saturated blues, turquoises, and greens, with gold and rust rocks and lavender hills — colors, Sharon writes, that a camera simply can’t see.

Sharon Virts paints the way she writes and writes the way she paints. A bestselling historical fiction novelist and Reflectionist artist, she works in 3-dimensional oil—building richly textured, color-saturated surfaces that turn the landscapes, wildlife, and weathered places of the Virginia countryside into living stories. On the page or on the canvas, her instinct is the same: to capture the visual and emotion of a scene in pigment and layered oil so the story might live forever.

She has painted since she was six years old, taught first by her father and later as a student of JD Miller, a master of sculpted oil, in whose living tradition she now works. That lineage lives in her surfaces—sculpted with the palette knife, alive to shifting light, and meant to be stood before rather than scrolled past. Her canvases carry the same instincts that drive her fiction: vivid character, a deep sense of time and place, and the conviction that beauty and memory are worth preserving.

This is the art of living history: the belief that the truest stories—a tyrant rooster ruling a farmyard, a fence row gone gloriously wild, a lane worn deep by a century of wheels—deserve more than recollection. In her hands, three-dimensional oil becomes the vessel that keeps them, reimagining historical narrative in texture, color, and light.
