A Scripps Original

About the Segment

History made personal — and personal made universal.

Between the Lines is Sharon Virts' monthly television segment — airing on Scripps stations across the mid-Atlantic and reaching viewers well beyond. Each month, Sharon brings her curatorial eye as a historical fiction author to the screen, sharing a hand-picked list of books worth reading and a reason to pick one up.

Part book club, part reading guide, part love letter to the habit of reading itself — every episode centers on a theme, from end-of-summer beach escapes to gothic tales for crisp autumn nights. Sharon talks about what makes a great read, what books give us that nothing else can, and how joining a community of readers (including her own #ReadWithSharon) can be the easiest way to fall back in love with a good story. It's reading made personal — and personal made universal.

Nine Nail-Biters

Ghosts, Gothic Tales & Haunted History

Nine recent releases for readers who love history — and don’t mind sleeping with one eye open

By Sharon Virts

Nine Nail-Biters book covers

Every autumn, I find myself reaching for stories where history and the supernatural collide. Give me an abandoned manor with a tragic past, a forgotten cemetery beneath ancient oaks, a candlelit séance, or a family secret that generations have tried to keep, and I am hooked before the end of the first chapter. What I love are beautifully crafted gothic novels — the kind that build suspense page by page, where the mood matters as much as the characters, and where the greatest terror often rises from the ghosts we carry with us rather than the ones lurking in the shadows.

The Nine Nail-Biters

  1. 1.A Box Full of Darkness — Simone St. James
  2. 2.A Penance for Crows — Shannon Morgan
  3. 3.Carry Me to My Grave — Christopher Golden
  4. 4.Hell Is A Farm — J.T. McNair & J. LeMay
  5. 5.The Grays of Truth — Sharon Virts
  6. 6.House of Splinters — Laura Purcell
  7. 7.If Walls Could Talk — Jean Grainger
  8. 8.Sarafina — Philip Fracassi
  9. 9.The Séance Garden — Juliet Blackwell
